fastest ever at Tufts

AMHERST -- Senior quad-captain Skip Pagel (Mystic, CT) and
junior Jesse Faller (Burlington, MA) of the Tufts men's outdoor
track & field team accomplished NCAA qualifying marks and broke school
records during the team's performance at the 2009 All-New England
Championships at UMass on Friday and Saturday.
Pagel won the New England decathlon title for the second time of his
career. The winner as an unknown freshman in 2006, he was second in 2007
and captured the title again this season with a school-record and NCAA
automatic qualifying 6,871 points. That's more than 200 points better
than his own Jumbo mark of 6,656 points from the 2007 NCAA meet. Pagel
won the long jump, shot put, discus throw and javelin events during the
'09 decathlon and scored 789 points with his 50.57 time in the 400
meters.
Faller broke the 21-year old Tufts outdoor 1,500 meters record with
his time of 3:51.08. That was about two seconds faster than Mark
Herlihy's 3:53.04 in 1988. Faller was second at the meet and missed the
NCAA automatic qualifying mark by just 0.48 of a second. He was well
within the 3:55 provisional mark.
Pagel and Faller scored all of Tufts' 18 points at the meet, which
was good for a 16th place tie.
Junior Jared Engelking (Westborough, MA) improved his NCAA
mark in the 110 hurdles to 14.73 seconds. He ran the time in the
preliminaries and did not compete in the final.
Tufts goes to the ECAC Championships next Thursday and Friday prior
to the NCAA Championships.
