NEW LONDON, Conn. -- With 116 points scored at the 2009
NESCAC Championships, the Tufts University men's outdoor track & field
team placed third by a hair on Saturday at Connecticut College. Bates
College finished second with 116.5 points, and the conference title was
won by Williams College with 158.5 points.
Two Jumbos won NESCAC titles. Senior Phil Rotella
(Louisville, KY) was first in the 200 meters with a time of 22.47
seconds. The Jumbos scored 29 total points in the 100- and 200-meter
sprints, and Rotella led the way. He was also second in the 100,
finishing in 11.16 seconds. Junior Andrew Longley (Short Hills, NJ)
was fourth in the 100 (11.47) and sixth in the 200 (22.95).
Junior Jared Engelking (Westborough, MA) had
three top-four performances, including a win in the 110-meter hurdles
with a time of 15.04 seconds. He was also second in the javelin throw
with a 175'1" (53.37m) heave, and was fourth in the pole vault
(13'9"/4.19m). Sophomore Alex Gresham (Milton, MA) also had a
runner-up effort for Tufts in the hammer throw, launching it 164'9"
(50.22m).
Distance runners Jesse Faller (Burlington, MA)
and quad-captain Nick Welch (Seattle, WA) scored in two events
each. Welch was third in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:40.51) and sixth the
5K (15:34.20). Faller placed third in the 1,500 meters (3:56.74) and
eighth in the 5,000 (15:39.24).
Tufts got third-place points in the pole vault from
sophomore Sam Read (Barkhamsted, CT) with a best effort of 14'2
3/4" (4.34m). Senior quad-captain Skip Pagel (Mystic, CT)
scored in three events for Tufts, the long jump (21'11 1/2"/6.69m), the
pole vault (13'9"/4.19m) and the 110-meter hurdles (16.41).
Coach Ethan Barron's squad competes at the New England
Division 3 Championships at Springfield College beginning on Thursday.
