Skip Pagel is ranked sixth nationally in the Decathlon

SOMERVILLE -- Senior quad-captain Skip Pagel (Mystic, CT) of the Tufts men's outdoor track & field team posted a national qualifying mark of 6,332 points at the Tufts Last Second Decathlon this past weekend at Dussault Track. Pagel improved his national ranking from 12th to sixth in the multi-event. Meanwhile, sophomore James Wheeler (Hanover, MA) qualified for New England's with his 5,374 points.

Pagel's biggest point gains came from his 100-meter (759) and 400-meter (756) times of 11.47 seconds and 51.29 seconds, respectively. He nearly broke 700 points (698) in the 1,500 with a 4:37.15 finish. To his credit, Pagel's excellent score came while hitting a personal record in just one event (discus).

In Wheeler's decathlon, the bulk of his score came from his commanding 3,242 points on the first day. The 804 points that he received for his time of 11.26 seconds in the 100 meters on Friday was the best single-event total for the weekend. He also cleared 6'2 1/4" (1.89 meters) in the high jump for 705 points.

The decathlon featured four athletes overall, with Isaac Nicholson from Williams scoring 5,634 points and Mike Downey from Middlebury accumulating 4,079 points.
