Sam Read cleared 13'3" to win the pole vault

DEDHAM -- The Tufts University men's outdoor track &
field team was among the front finishers in several events at the rainy
Solomon Invitational hosted by Northeastern University on Saturday.
Junior Jesse Faller (Burlington, MA) was first in
a field of 12 runners with a time of 15:16.52 in the 5,000 meter run.
Senior high jumper James Bradley (Atkinson, NH), competing for
the first time since an All-American effort at the NCAA Indoor
championships, cleared 6'6" (1.98m) at the meet. Sophomore Sam Read (Barkhamsted,
CT) defeated a small field in the pole vault with 13'3" (4.03m)
clearance, as did senior quad-captain Skip Pagel (Mystic, CT) in
the 400-meter hurdles (58.58 seconds).
Jumbos finished second and third in the 100 meter dash
with sophomore James Wheeler (Hanover, MA) posting a time of
11.75 seconds and senior quad-captain Kevin Fitzgerald (Scarborough,
NY) on his shoulder in 11.78 seconds. Two Tufts throwers had
runner-up performances. Chris Delany hurled the discus 131" flat
(39.94m) and junior Jared Engelking (Westborough, MA), rounding
into form in the javelin throw, had a 175' 1" (53.38m) launch.
Junior Matt Tirrell (Burlington, MA) was the
first collegiate finisher in the 800 meter run (2:00.31).
Coach Ethan Barron's squad is scheduled to compete at
two Division I venues next weekend. On Friday night, some Jumbos will
compete at the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton University in New
Jersey. On Saturday, the team travels to the Dartmouth Invitational in
New Hampshire.
