Billy Hale beat out a Boston College competitor to win the 800

NORTH EASTON -- Senior Jared Engelking (Westborough, MA) and junior Billy Hale (Menlo Park, CA) both won events to top a list of solid performances by the Tufts University men's outdoor track & field team at the Skyhawk Invitational hosted by Stonehill College on Saturday. The Jumbos took second place as a team out of 13 with 127 points.

Engelking was first in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.21 seconds, a half-second victory over Division II Assumption College's Anthony Dowd. Hale nipped Boston College's James LaGreca at the finish line to win the 800 meter run, 1:59.31 to 1:59.44.

The Jumbos scored 40 points in second-place finishes. Junior Ryan Lena (Orono, ME) was 1.58 seconds off the pace in the 3,000 meter steeple chase with his 10:00.36 runner-up time. Junior quad-captain Nick Welch (Seattle, MA) earned another distance second for the Jumbos with his 15:27.72 in the 5,000 meter run. A small high jump field of five had Jumbo junior Isaiah Paramore (Charlotte, NC) in second with a 6'2" (1.87m) best. Sophomore Sam Read's (Barkhamsted, CT) clearance of 13'11 1/4" in the pole vault was also second, as was the 148' flat (45.12) hammer throw by freshman Matt Williams (Punta Gorda, FL).

The Tufts 4x100 meter relay of sophomore James Wheeler (Hanover, MA), senior quad-captain Kevin Fitzgerald (Scarborough, NY), freshman Ben Crastnopal (Doylestown, PA) and senior Phil Rotella (Louisville, KY) was a hair out of second with a time of 44.31 seconds. Rotella also had an individual third in the 100 meter dash (11.21 seconds).

The Jumbos compete at Northeastern University's Solomon Invitational next Saturday (Apr. 11).
