David Dormon earned his first collegiate victory in the shot put
 

MEDFORD � The Tufts University men�s outdoor track & field team opened its 2009 season by hosting the annual Snowflake Classic at Ellis Oval/Dussault Track on Saturday afternoon. The Jumbos scored third at the meet with 104.5 points against a field of 13 teams.

The Jumbos won three events. Junior Jesse Faller (Burlington, MA) was first in the 1,500 meter run in a 3:59.86 time. Tufts had three in the top eight for the race, including junior Billy Hale (Menlo Park, CA) in fourth place (4:05.30). Faller was also fourth in the 800 meter run, finishing in 2:00.37.

In a small 3,000 meter steeplechase field, junior Nick Welch (Seattle, WA) ran a 9:50.06 winning time. Jumbos went 1-2 in the shot put, with sophomore David Dormon (Foxborough, MA) posting his first college win at a distance of 43�8� (13.31m). Freshman Matt Williams (Punta Gorda, FL) was the runner-up at 43�3� (13.18m). The Jumbos again had three athletes scoring in the event, with senior Skip Pagel (Mystic, CT) taking fourth with a best heave of 40�8 �� (12.41m).

Williams was one of three to score runner-up points for the Jumbos. Junior Isaiah Paramore (Charlotte, NC) lofted himself 6�1 �� (1.86m) over the bar to place second in the high jump. Freshman Luke Lamothe (Weatogue, CT) was second in the javelin with the best collegiate throw of the day at 172�3� (52.51m). Drew Soltysiak of the Greater Boston Track Club won the event with a 193�6� (58.97m) aerial.

Also part of a good day for the Tufts throwing team was sophomore Alex Gresham (Milton, MA), who placed third in the hammer throw with a 145�8� (44.40m) launch.

RPI won the season-opening meet with 141 points, followed by Bates (132.5), Tufts, Boston University (94) and Southern Maine (88.5).

The Jumbos are at the Stonehill Invitational next Saturday (Apr. 4).
