MEDFORD -- Four members of the Tufts University track &
field team and Coach Ethan Barron spent spring break at Disney World,
competing at the Walt Disney World Invitational at Disney Wide World of
Sports. Senior Skip Pagel (Mystic, CT) and junior Jared
Engelking (Westborough, MA) made good use of the trip, qualifying
for the NCAA Championships in the decathlon.
Competing against each other as the only two entries in
the decathlon, Pagel scored 6,150 points and Engelking finished with 6,
094, both over the NCAA Div. 3 provisional qualifying mark of 6,050
points.
Though Pagel scored more points in the end, due to the
way decathlon points are scored Engelking had better marks in six of the
10 events. Pagel won the 400 meters (51.93 seconds), the 1,500 meters
(4:42.62), the high jump (5'8 3/4"/1.75m) and the pole vault (12'7
1/2"/3.85m). Engelking won the 100 meters (11.59 seconds), the 110
hurdles (14.92), the long jump (20' 8 1/2"/6.31m), the shot put
(37'6"/11.43m), the discus throw (105'4"/32.11m) and the javelin throw
(166'1"/50.62m).
Senior quad-captain James Bradley (Atkinson, NH),
only days removed from tying for sixth place at the NCAA indoor
championships, was also in action at the Disney meet and placed sixth in
the high jump with a 6'3 1/2" (1.92m) lift.
Sophomore Sam Read (Barkhamsted, CT) rounded out
the Jumbo squad, finishing fifth in the pole vault with an excellent
14'7 1/4" (4.45m) mark.
Tufts hosts the Snowflake Classic at Dussault Track next
Saturday (Mar. 28).
