TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- With three finishes in the top six, the Tufts
University men's indoor track & field team placed 14th out of 74 scoring
teams at the 2009 NCAA Division 3 Championships at Rose-Hulman Institute
of Technology on Friday and Saturday.
On Friday, the distance medley relay team opened Tufts' appearance at
the 2009 Nationals by taking third place. In Saturday's events, junior
Jesse Faller (Burlington, MA) - part of the DMR - added a second
All-American showing (top eight) by running fourth in the 5,000 meters.
Also on Saturday, senior quad-captain James Bradley (Atkinson, NH)
tied for sixth place in the high jump.
Seeded fifth entering the 2009 NCAA Division 3
Championships, Tufts University's distance medley relay improved to a
third-place finish in the national championship race on Friday afternoon.
The foursome of junior Billy Hale (Menlo Park, CA), senior
Phil Rotella (Louisville, KY), junior Scott Brinkman (Alamo, CA)
and Faller ran a 10:04.25 time
to earn All-American honors. The Wisconsin-Oshkosh distance medley relay squad set a meet record
with a time of 9:56.79 to outdistance a squad from Wisconsin-La Crosse
by less than three seconds to win the NCAA title. Tufts was next, less
than a second ahead of Muhlenberg (10:04.78).
Faller, a two-time cross country All-American, earned the fourth
national honor of his Tufts running career in the indoor 5K with a
14:35.46 time. That was almost eight seconds faster than his qualifying
time of 14:43.25, which was the last of the 15 spots to make it into the
NCAA 5K. Faller's fourth-place finish in the final was 11 places better
than his seed. Junior quad-captain Nick Welch (Seattle, WA) also
ran in the 5,000 at NCAA's, crossing the finish line in 15:21.90 for
15th place.
Bradley, a three-time national qualifier indoors and outdoors, earned
his first All-American honor with a 6'8 3/4" high jump (2.05m) to tie
for sixth at the meet
Tufts scored 13.5 points overall at the meet. The 14th place finish
was first among New England teams at the NCAA meet. Hale, Rotella and
Brinkman were also All-Americans for the first time.
