BOSTON -- The Tufts University men's indoor track & field team's
distance medley relay took third place at the 2009 New England Open
Championships on Friday at Boston University with a school-record time.
The Jumbos tied for 25th place at the two-day event with the six points
scored by the DMR.
The DMR's time of 9:59.33, converted to a 10:02.33 due to the banked
track at Boston University, is an NCAA provisional qualifying
mark. It was run by the foursome of junior Scott Brinkman (Alamo, CA),
junior Jesse Faller (Burlington, MA), junior Billy Hale (Menlo
Park, CA) and senior Phil Rotella (Louisville, KY). It was
the top Division III time at the meet. Faller and Hale were members of
the previous record-holding DMR, which timed 10:00.05 last year.
Tufts narrowly missed scoring in three other events at the Open New
England's. The 4x800 meter relay of Brinkman, junior Jason Hanrahan (Westport,
CT), senior Marcelo Norsworthy (Pflugerville, TX) and sophomore Corey Melnick (Waltham, VT) finished ninth with an excellent 7:51.22 time. Junior hurdler
Ikenna Acholonu (Shoreline, WA) was also ninth in the 55-meter
hurdles with a time of 8.00 seconds in the finals. Senior Colin
Fitzgerald (Belmont, MA) ran a time of 22.30 seconds in the 200
meters that was just 0.02 off the Tufts record for 11th place.
The Jumbos host the ECAC Division III Championships at the Gantcher
Center next weekend (Mar. 6-7).
