MEDFORD -- NESCAC men's track & field heavyweights Tufts and Williams battled for the NESCAC Championship at Hamilton College on Saturday, with the Ephs scoring a 195-183 victory. Third-place Bates scored 84.5 points in the 11-team outdoor meet.

The Jumbos scored and performed well in the hurdles. Sophomore Ikenna Acholonu (Shoreline, WA) won the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.95 seconds that met the NCAA provisional qualifying mark exactly. That led a 1-2-3 finish for the Jumbos in the event. Sophomore Trevor Donadt (Northborough, MA) was second in 15.01 seconds and sophomore Jared Engelking (Westborough, MA) took third in 15.17 seconds. In the 400 hurdles, Donadt won with an NCAA qualifying time of 54.33 seconds.

Tufts won five events overall. The distance group provided two of them, with senior quad-captain Dave Sorensen (Dover, MA) winning the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 9:10.73 and sophomore Jesse Faller (Burlington, MA) topping the 5,000 meters field with a 15:10.22 time. Sorensen's mark qualifies him for Nationals provisionally. The other victory came from junior high jumper James Bradley (Atkinson, NH) with 6'5" clearance (1.96m). Senior quad-captain Jeremy Arak (Ipswhich, MA) was third in the event at 6'3" (1.91m) for big Jumbo points.

Two runner-up relay efforts came from the 4x100 (42.63 seconds) and the distance medley (10:16.27). The 4x1 was made up of sophomore Marc Soskin (Minnetonka, MN), junior Phil Rotella (Louisville, KY), junior Colin Fitzgerald and sophomore Andrew Longley (Short Hills, NJ), while the DMR was Faller, junior Marvin Walker (New York, NY), sophomore Billy Hale (Menlo Park, CA) and Sorensen. Senior quad-captain Dan Marcy (Middletown, NY) was a shade behind the leader in the triple jump with his best effort of 14.53m (47'8").

Other notable efforts came from senior Chris Kantos (Apple Valley, MN), who ran a 10k and 5k double and scored fifth in the 10k (32:37.25). Sophomore Nick Welch (Seattle, WA) ran a 5k-steeplechase double and scored in both events. Faller won the 5k and then led off the DMR about 40 mins later
and handed off in first.

Tufts continues the championship season and looks to build its NCAA roster next weekend at the New England Division III meet hosted by Coast Guard in New London, Conn.
