ADA, Ohio -- Senior quad-captain Dan Marcy (Middletown, NY) of
the Tufts men's indoor track & field team is the national runner-up in
the triple jump after his performance on Saturday at the NCAA Division
III Championships hosted by Ohio Northern University. The second-place
finish also earns All-American status for Marcy, the second of his
career.
Seeded fourth in the event entering NCAA's with a 48'2 1/2" jump,
Marcy improved on that and won the first flight of the preliminaries
with a best leap of 48'4 1'2" (14.74m). That placed him second out of
nine qualifiers for the final. He matched that distance in the final on
his third jump. He fouled on his last three jumps trying to catch NCAA
champion Kamar Jones of Fisk University, who reached 48'9" (14.86m) to
win the title. Marcy's effort scored eight points for Tufts, tying the
team for 25th place in the nation.
In the only NCAA action on Friday for Tufts, senior
quad-captain Dave Sorensen (Dover, MA) qualified for the final in
the mile run. His time of 4:17.52 was fourth-best in the preliminaries.
However, he slipped to ninth in the final with a 4:19.29 run on
Saturday, just missing All-America honors (top eight).
Junior high jumper James
Bradley (Atkinson, NH) also qualified for the NCAA's and competed on Saturday.
However, he was one of three competitors unable to clear the opening
height at the meet.
