Quad-captain Dave Sorensen ran an NCAA-qualifying 5K at Princeton

MEDFORD -- Four members of the Tufts University men's outdoor track & field team traveled down to Princeton, New Jersey on Friday for the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton University's Weaver Stadium. After senior quad-captain Dave Sorensen (Dover, MA) ran an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 14:43.13 in the 5,000 meters at Princeton, the Jumbos returned home and the team bused over to MIT on Saturday. Senior quad-captain Dan Marcy (Middletown, NY) improved his NCAA mark in the triple jump by over two feet to 48'3 1/2" (14.72m) at MIT.

Those were the highlights of a busy weekend for the Jumbos, the last of the regular-season before the championship stretch starts next week at the NESCAC Championships hosted by Hamilton College in Clinton, NY. Neither meets from the weekend included team scoring.

Sorensen's 5K time was nearly five seconds faster than the 14:48 NCAA provisional mark at Princeton, where he finished 16th in a 78-man field populated primarily by Division I athletes. Tufts junior Nick Welch (Seattle, WA) also made the New Jersey trip and ran 15:10.49 in the 5K.

Marcy's 48-foot triple jump was one of three Tufts wins at MIT. Sophomore Jesse Faller (Burlington, MA) was first in the 5K, running 15:02.85. Senior quad-captain Jeremy Arak (Ipswich, MA) cleared 6'4 3/4" to win the high jump.

A 21' 1/2" long jump also earned a second place for March at MIT. Senior Joe Brown had a good day in the throws, including seconds in the discus throw at 123'7" (37.67m) and a 153'6" (46.79m) heave of the hammer. Sophomore Ikenna Acholonu (Shoreline, WA) also posted a second-place performance for Tufts with a time of 15.34 seconds in the 15.34 seconds.
