STONEHILL -- In an impressive show of depth and versatility, the Tufts men's outdoor track & field team won the Skyhawk Invitational at Stonehill College on Saturdayd. The Jumbos scored 171.5 points, topping a field of 12 that included Division I and II teams. They were led by two of their captains, seniors Dave Sorensen (Dover, MA) and Dan Marcy (Middletown, NY), who both won events with NCAA qualifying marks.

Sorensen won the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a 9:14.76 time that was well under the NCAA provisional standard of 9:23 flat. Marcy snuck inside the NCAA standard in the triple jump, winning with a best distance of 46' 1/2" (14.03m). The NCAA minimum is 45'11".

The Jumbos won five events overall. Sophomore Scott Brinkman (Alamo, CA) was first in the 400 meters (50.64 seconds) and senior Joe Brown's 155' 3" (47.32m) heave of the hammer won by an inch. Brinkman also led off a 4x4 group of sophomore Trevor Donadt (Northborough, MA), sophomore Andrew Longley (Short Hills, NJ) and senior quad-captain Nate Scott (East Hartford, CT), which won in 3:25.08.

Scott was one of four Jumbos in the top six for the 110 hurdles, led by sophomore Jared Engelking (Westborough, MA) with a time of 15.18 seconds. Donadt added a 55.32 finish in the 400 hurdles for second place. Coach Ethan Barron's Jumbos flashed their team strength in many events. Four scored in the high jump, with junior James Bradley (Atkinson, NH) clearing 6'4" (1.93m). The three best triple jumps of the meet came from Jumbos, with senior Jacob Fromer (Albany, NY) backing up Marcy at 44' 3 1/2" (13.50m).

The Jumbos topped a field that had athletes from schools such as the hosts (140.5 points for second place), Boston College (135), UMass Lowell (77), Wheaton (65) and Northeastern (60). Tufts goes to Northeastern next weekend.
