HANOVER, N.H. -- The Tufts University men's outdoor
track & field team scored 30 points at the 2007 New England
Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Dartmouth College. That was good
enough for ninth place overall and second place among New England
Division III teams.
Sophomore Fielding "Skip" Pagel (Mystic, CT) and
senior tri-captain Fred Jones (Northfield, MA) led the Jumbos
with second-place finishes at the meet. Pagel scored a personal-best
6,448 points in the Decathlon, a total that currently ranks ninth on the
NCAA performance list. It's likely to earn him a trip to the NCAA
Championships at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh May 24-26. Jones
was second in the long jump with a leap of 23-feet, 3 1/4 inches at the
New England meet.
Jones also produced a sixth-place finish in the triple
jump at the meet, landing at 46' 3 1/2". Jumbo junior Dan Marcy
(Middletown, NY), still rounding into form after an injury, was
fourth in the triple jump with a 46' 4 3/4" mark. Tufts scored eight
points in the event overall.
Freshman Ikenna Acholonu (Shoreline, WA) also
scored for Tufts with a time of 15.19 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles
for fifth place. Tufts also got two seventh-place points from the 4x100
meter relay of senior Mickey Ferri (Stamford, CT), freshman
Colin Fitzgerald (Scarborough, NY), Jones and freshman Andrew
Longley (Short Hills, NJ) with a time of 42.74 seconds.
With Pagel, Jones and Dave Sorensen (Dover, MA)
in the 3,000-meter steeplechase likely to qualify for the NCAA meet,
Tufts will get a "last chance" to qualify athletes this Saturday (May
19) at MIT.
