SPRINGFIELD -- Again flexing its depth, the Tufts University men's
outdoor track & field team took second place at the 2007 New England
Division III Championships hosted by Springfield College. Tufts scored
91.5 points, edging the 89 points scored by host Springfield for second
place. Williams won the title with 137.5 points.
The Jumbos won two titles on the day, but piled up points with several
finishes among the top eight overall. Five athletes provisionally
qualified for the upcoming NCAA Championships at the meet, and another
improved his qualifying mark in a successful day for head coach Ethan
Barron's Jumbos.
The lone individual Tufts champion was freshman Andrew Longley (Short
Hills, NJ), whose hand-held time of 55.5 seconds in the 400 meter
hurdles beat Williams College's Joseph Buck by a hair. Longley was also
a part of the other Jumbo win in the 4x400 relay. Sophomore James
Bradley (Atkinson, NH), senior Dustin Virgilio (Pittsfield, MA),
junior Nathan Scott (East Hartford, CT) and Longley finished in 3
minutes, 22.1 seconds (hand held) to edge a Coast Guard foursome for the
title.
Senior tri-captain Fred Jones (Northfield, MA) was second at the meet
and surpassed the NCAA provisional qualifying mark in athe long jump
with a distance of 23 feet, 4 1/2 inches. That's currently 17th
nationally. Junior Dan Marcy (Middletown, NY) also cleared the
NCAA provisional mark in the tiple jump at 46' 5 1/2" for third place.
Three Tufts athletes scored more than the required 6,000 points in the
decathlon to provisionally qualify for Nationals. Junior Derek
Engelking (Westborough, MA) was second at the meet with 6,137
points, following by classmate Skip Pagel (Mystic, CT) in third
with 6,087 points and freshman Jared Engelking (Westborough, MA)
in fifth with 6,051 points.
In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, junior Dave Sorensen (Dover, MA)
improved his provisional qualifying time to 9:14.30, 11th best in the
nation.
