COLLEGE MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD RESULTS

Results

MEDFORD -- In a remarkable display of competitive spirit, five decathletes from Tufts University and Bates College finished a head-to-head competition in miserable conditions on Sunday at Tufts University's Dussault Complex. Jumbo sophomore Skip Pagel (Mystic, CT) won with 5,906 points.

The first five events on Saturday were completed in relatively mild conditions, though the wind was strong. Bates College's John Miley led after one day with 3,166 points, followed by Pagel at 3,144. Pagel won the 100 meters (11.83 seconds), long jump (20 feet, 11 1/4 inches) and the 400 meters (51.62 seconds). Miley won the shot put (37' 11 1/4") and tied with teammate Erik Born in the high jump at 6 feet.

Sunday brought the beginning of a Nor'easter that dumped inches of rain and hail in Greater Boston, canceling most collegiate sporting events in the area. It did not deter the five decathletes. They competed in three events outside before the pole vault and 1,500 meters were moved inside to the Gantcher Center. Pagel went on to win the competition despite winning just one of Sunday's five events. He was first in the pole vault at 13' 3 1/2" and did well enough in the other events to win by 26 points. His 5,906 total fell 94 shy of the NCAA provisional standard.

Miley, who finished with 5,880 points, won the discus (100' 9") and 1,500 meters (4:34.34) on Sunday. Tufts junior Derek Engelking (Westborough, MA) dominated the javelin throw, his toss of 164' 9" landing more than 30 feet further than the next best. He took third overall with 5,731 points. His brother Jared Engelking (Westborough, MA) won Sunday's 110-meter hurdles in 15.61 seconds and was fourth overall with 5,543 points.
