NEW LONDON, Conn. -- In the second meet of the 2007 outdoor track &
field season, the Tufts University men captured the Coast Guard
Invitational on Saturday. The Jumbos out-scored host Coast Guard 224-194
as the two teams dominated the rest of the seven-team field.
Head coach Ethan Barron's squad swept the hurdles and relay events for
big points. In the 110 meter hurdles, freshman Ikenna Acholonu
(Shoreline, WA) won in 15.46 seconds, nipping Babson's Dan Cowan by
the closest of margins (0.01). Jumbo junior Nathan Scott (East
Hartford, CT) won the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 58 seconds
flat.
Scott also factored into the Tufts relay victories. In the 4x100, the
Jumbos ran a quick time of 43.23 seconds to edge Division II New Haven
(43.25). The winning foursome was senior Mickey Ferri (Stamford, CT),
Scott, senior tri-captain Fred Jones (Northampton, MA) and
freshman Andrew Longley (Short Hills, NJ). Scott also ran the
second leg of the 4x400, joined by freshman Scott Brinkman (Alamo,
CA), Dan Stone (Hamden, CT) and senior Dustin Virgilio
(Pittsfield, MA), for a 3:26.17 winning time.
Ferri was also an individual winner in the 100 meter dash (11.27
