Championship Results

BOSTON -- Senior tri-captain Fred Jones (Northfield, MA) went 47 feet, 3 3/4 inches for his best triple jump of the season so far to lead the Tufts men's indoor track & field team at the Open New England Championships hosted by Boston University on Friday and Saturday.

Tufts scored eight points at the meet to finish in 18th place. They were sixth among Division III schools.

Jones improved on his previous season's best of 47'2 1/2" at the MIT Invitational on February 10. He is provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the event with today's distance. He took third at the Open New England meet, which features competitors from Division I, II and III schools.

Junior high jumper Jeremy Arak (Ipswich, MA) and freshman hurdler Ikenna Acholonu (Shoreline, WA) also scored for Tufts. Arak tied for seventh place by clearing 6'3 1/2". In the 55 meter hurdles, Acholonu made it through the preliminaries and semi-finals to race in the finals and finished seventh with a time of 7.84 seconds.

Other top 10 performances by Jumbos came from senior tri-captain Nate Cleveland (Auburn, ME) in the 800 meters. He qualified for the final with a time of 1 minute, 54.77 seconds in the prelims, then ran 1:58.08 for tenth place. Junior Dave Sorensen (Dover, MA) was also tenth with an 8:38.08 time in the 3,000 meters.

Cleveland's preliminary time in the 800 and the 4x400 meter relay's 3:21.22 for 12th place were within the NCAA provisional standards for both events, but due to the banked track at BU those times will be adjusted and will likely not fall within the necessary standard.
