MEDFORD -- Senior tri-captain Fred Jones (Northampton, MA) won
the long jump and the triple jump at the MIT Invitational on Saturday
with some of the nation's best marks in both events. That highlighted
the Jumbo indoor track & field team's effort at the non-scoring meet.
Jones won the long jump with a distance of 23 feet, 8 1/2 inches that
is currently the best in the nation for Division III. It provisionally
qualifies for the event at the NCAA Championships, and is half an inch
from the automatic mark. In the triple, Jones went 47' 2 1/2" for a
provisional qualifying mark that is one of the best in the nation. He
improved his previous qualifying mark of 46' 2 3/4" set at the Husky
Carnival on December 2.
Tufts also won the 4x400 meter relay, the high jump and the weight
throw. In the 4x4, Maneesh Singhal, sophomore Ashish Datta
(Demarest, NJ) , Dan Stone and Rony Jacques won with a
time of 3 minutes, 30.07 seconds. Junior Jeremy Arak (Ipswich, MA)
was first in the high jump by clearing 6' 5". Joe Brown
earned his first victory of the season in the Weight Throw with 51' 1"
distance.
Datta earned one of two runner-up finishes for the Jumbos, taking
second in 200 meter dash with a time of 24.09 seconds. Sophomore
