Matt Tirrell - 800 meter win for Tufts at Gantcher
 

MEDFORD -- The Tufts University men's track & field team's Class of 2010 had several noteworthy performances at the second Tufts indoor invitational of the season at the Gantcher Center on Saturday. Tufts won the 15-team meet easily, scoring 205 points. Bates College was a distant second at 131 points.

The Jumbo freshman class produced three victories at the meet. Matt Tirrell (Burlington, MA) won the 800 meter run with a time of 1 minute, 58.85 seconds. Classmate Nick Welch (Seattle, WA) ran 4:27.58 to win the one mile run by over two seconds. Ikenna Acholonu (Shoreline, WA) led a 1-2-3 Tufts effort in the 55 meter hurdles by finishing in 7.87 seconds.

Freshman Jared Engelking (Westborough, MA) took second in the 55 hurldes (7.9 seconds), and Andrew Longley (Short Hills, NJ) posted another first-year runner-up showing in the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.35 seconds.

Veteran stalwart Fred Jones (Northfield, MA) also won for the Jumbos, out-distancing the competition in the long jump with a best of 22 feet, 9 1/4 inches. Though they ran as an exhibition, the "B" distance medley relay squad won the race with a 10:44.76 time.

Other second-place showings included sophomore Ted McMahan in the high jump at 6' 3 1/4" and junior Derek Engelking (Westborough, MA) with 3,159 points in the Pentathlon

The Jumbos split the squad to compete at both Bowdoin and Boston University next weekend.
