MEDFORD -- The Tufts University men's indoor track & field team
opened the Gantcher Family Sports & Convocation Center for a new
season on Saturday with the first of three meets to be held there this
winter. Highlighting the event for the Jumbos was the team's sweep in
the jumping events.
Senior tri-captain Fred Jones (Northfield, MA) won both the
long and triple jumps. His mark of 22 feet, 10 inches won the long jump
by exactly a foot over UMass Lowell's Terry Young. Jones went 46' 0
1/2" to win the triple by over two feet. Sophomore Ted McMahon gave
Tufts the sweep by winning the high jump with a 6' 3 1/4" best.
Junior Jeremy Arak (Ipswich, MA) took second place in the high
jump.
The 4x800 meter relay team also won for Tufts. The Jumbo foursome laid
down a time of 8 minutes, 10.54 seconds that out-kicked the top team
from Division II UMass Lowell by almost two and a half seconds.
In his first meet at Gantcher, freshman Nick Welch (Seattle, WA) ran
8:42.98 in the 3,000 meter run to take second place. Likewise, Ryan
Lena (Orono, ME) was second in his Gantcher debut with a time of
15:42.23 in the 5,000 meter run.
The Jumbos stay home to host the second Tufts Invitational of the
season on Saturday (Jan. 20).
