BOSTON -- The Tufts Men's Indoor Track & Field team had a great start to the 2004-05 season at the Husky Winter Carnival hosted by Northeastern University on Saturday.

Junior Matt Lacey (Amherst, MA) in the 5,000 meters and sophomore Fred Jones (Northfield, MA) in the Triple Jump both qualified provisionally for the NCAA championship meet. Lacey was third overall at the Husky Carnival featuring Div. I, II and III teams with a time of 14 minutes, 48.40 seconds. Jones was second with a triple leap of 47-11 1/4 and was also third in the Long Jump at 22-4 1/2.

Head coach Connie Putnam's team also had a bunch of competitors qualify for Division III New England meet. It was a very balanced day from sprints to jumps to throws to distance as the Jumbos are a much more balanced team this year.

A number of Jumbos placed among the top 10. Sophomore Ryan Byrne (Tewksbury, MA) took third in the shot put with a best heave of 46-8 flat. Junior teammate Jason Galvin (Norwell, MA) was eighth wiht a 43-10 mark. Galvin also earned 10th in the Weight Throw, unwinding a 42-9 toss. Sophomore Nate Cleveland (Auburn, ME) ran a 2:00.05 in the 800 meters to place eighth, which is also where senior Michael Don (Clayton, MO) finished in the 3,000 meters (8:48.01). The Jumbos had three runners in the 5,000 top 10, with freshman Chris Kantos (Apple Valley, MN) and sophomore Matt Fortin (Raymond, ME) joining Lacey with times of 15:07.50 and 15:07. 95, respectively.
