SPRINGFIELD -- The Tufts University Men's Outdoor Track & Field team took fifth place at the New England Division III Championships hosted by Springfield College Thursday through Saturday. Tufts scored 52 points and finished just two points behind host Springfield in fourth place. Williams College won the meet with 167.5 points, followed by MIT (99.5) and Bates (72.5).
Sophomore Fred Jones (Northfield, MA) led the Jumbo effort by winning the Long Jump with a distance of 23 feet, 2 inches. He is currently ranked tenth nationally in the event with his 23-6 1/4 at UMass Lowell on April 16. Jones was also the runner-up in the Triple Jump the New England D3 meet with 46-6 length. He's eighth among NCAA Division III athletes in the TJ after a 47-0 3/4 at the NESCAC Championships last week.
Besides Jones, Tufts did not have a finish inside the top three. Five Jumbos placed fifth at the meet. Junior
Jason Galvin (Norwell, MA) heaved the Hammer 168-4, passing the NCAA provisional mark by a foot. Dan Marcy doubled up with Jones scoring points in the Triple Jump with a 44-2 3/4 for fifth. Junior Matt Lacey (Amherst, MA) was fifth in the 1,500 meter run less than two seconds off the pace in 3:57.21.
Raynald Carre (Middletown, CT) finished the 400 meter run in 50.46 seconds to take fifth place. Decathlon rookie
Nate Scott (East Hartford, CT) was fifth in the multi-event, scoring 5,608 points. He won the 1,500 meters in the decathlon with a time of 4:30 flat.
