BOSTON -- The Tufts University Men's Outdoor Track & Field team turned in an excellent effort at the 2004 Open New England Championships hosted by Northeastern University on Friday and Saturday. The Jumbos took 10th place overall and 3rd among Division III teams.
The Jumbos scored 28 points, out-scoring some Division I programs such as UMass, Holy Cross and BU. Tufts was boosted by the second-place finishes (8 points each) of freshmen
Joshua Kennedy (Guilford, CT) and Fred Jones (Northfield, MA). Kennedy was second in the 10,000 Meters with a time of 32 minutes, 7.31 seconds. Jones was the runner-up in the Triple Jump with a best of 46 feet, 2 inches.
Jones also placed sixth in the Long Jump at 22' 3 3/4" for three points and a two-even total of 11. Supporting Kennedy's long-distance scoring was junior
Nate Brigham (Penacook, NH) in fifth for the 5,000 Meters with a time of 15:02.38. The Jumbos also got seventh in the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase with a time of 9:28.30 from senior tri-captain
Peter Jurczynski (Schenectady, NY).
Despite these high finishes at the meet featuring Division I, II and III athletes, only one Jumbo extended his NCAA qualifying mark. Junior
Dan March (Bethesda, MD) PR'd in the Hammer Throw to 171' 3" for a sixth place finish.
Tufts competes at Williams College in the ECAC Championships starting next Friday.
