BRUNSWICK, Me. -- The Tufts men's indoor track & field team finished a strong fourth at the 2004 ECAC Division III Indoor Championship meet hosted by Bowdoin College on Friday and Saturday. The Jumbos scored 56.5 points, right behind Springfield College (59). Cortland won the meet with 92 points.
As usual this winter, freshman Fred Jones (Northfield, MA) led the way. He won the Triple Jump with a best effort of 46 feet, 2 1/2 inches, and was second in Long Jump at 22-7 3/4. Alone he scored 18 points, nearly a third of the team's total. Junior
Nate Thompson (South Portland, ME) also earned a runner-up finish in the 55 meter hurdles by cross the finish line in 7.77 seconds.
Two third-place showings boosted the Jumbos, and sophomore Matt Fortin (Raymond, ME) was involved with both of them. In the 1,500 meters, he was third with a time of 3 minutes, 59.33 seconds. Then he ran the anchor leg of the Distance Medley Relay with junior
Brian McNamara (Saratoga Springs, NY), junior Ray Carre (Middletown, CT), junior
Aaron Kaye (Los Altos, CA) to place third in 10:11.60.
Carre helped Tufts score points in three events. Besides the DMR, he was fifth in the 400 meters (50.68 seconds) and ran the anchor leg of the 4x400 meter relay with freshman
Nate Cleveland (Auburn, ME), sophomore Trevor Williams (Clifton Park, NY) and sophomore
Patrick Mahoney (Cranford, NJ) for a 3:23.89 time that was fifth.
Other individuals scoring were Mahoney sixth in the 800 meters in 1:56.93, sophomore
Matt Lacey (Amherst, MA) and freshman Josh Kennedy (Guilford, CT) sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 5,000 meters with times of 15:05.98 and 15:25.66, and sophomore
Seth LaPierre (Auburn, NH) for sixth in the Pole Vault with a top bid of 14-5 1/2.
Jones and junior Nate Brigham (Penacook, NH) will now represent Tufts at the 2004 NCAA Division III National Championship meet at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on March 12-13. Jones will compete in the Triple Jump, and Brigham will run in the 5,000 meters.
