Meet Results

MEDFORD --The Tufts University men's indoor track and field team thoroughly dominated their own home meet on Saturday, winning the Tufts Invitational III by a wide margin, as they scored 155 points to second-place Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's 98.5 points. Springfield College finished with 97 points for third place in the 14 team event.

Tufts was led by four first place finishes in the 19 events. Sophomore Patrick Mahoney (Cranford, NJ) won the 600 Meter Run with a school-record time 1 minute, 22.37 seconds. He broke the old mark of 1:22.49 set last season by Shawn Hansberry. Mahoney won the 600 on Saturday by a very narrow margin over teammate Nate Cleveland (Auburn, ME), who finished less than a half-second later with a time of 1:22.74. Sophomore Matt Lacey (Amherst, MA) dominated the 5,000 Meter Run (15:11.03), finishing in first place by almost thirty seconds. Junior Brian McNamara (Saratoga Springs, NY) finished in fifth place in a time of 16:07.62.

Freshman Fred Jones (Northfield, MA) had a strong day, finishing first in the long jump (21 feet, 11 inches) and second in the triple jump (46-8), scoring 18 points for the team. His Triple Jump leap tied the school record he set in the first competition of the season at Northeastern on December 6. Rounding out the first-place finishers was junior Dan March (Bethesda, MD), who finished first in the weight throw (53-6 1/2). That distance provisionally qualified March for the NCAA National Championship meet.

The Jumbos had an excellent race in the 1,500 Meter Run, where junior Nate Brigham (Penacook, NH) finished second (4:04.45), freshman Scott Merrick (Lancaster, NH) finished fifth (4:05.75), and sophomore Kyle Doran (North Attleborough, MA) finished eighth (4:09.03) to total 13 points in the event. This was one of three races that Tufts dominated, scoring 39 points in just three events. In the 3,000 Meter Run, junior Michael Don (Clayton, MO) finished third (8:49.26), freshman Matt Fortin (Raymond, ME) finished fourth (8:50.70), and sophomore Neil Orfield (Burnsville, MN) was eighth (9:08.60), as the trio combined to score 12 points for the team. The third event was the 5000 Meter Run, where Lacey and McNamara combined for 14 points.

The team will compete in two meets next weekend, hosting the Tufts Stampede on Saturday, beginning at 10:30 am, and also competing in the FasTrack Invite at Boston University, starting at 2 pm. These meets will be the last competitions before the championship season begins with the New England Division III Championships hosted by Bowdoin College on Saturday, February 21.
