Game Box Score

Sophomore Sean Kirwan scored two of his four goals during the decisive second quarter

MEDFORD -- The #8 Tufts University men's lacrosse team scored six unanswered goals at the start of the second quarter to take control of the game, and the Jumbos eventually earned a 14-9 victory over visiting Endicott College on Tuesday night at Bello Field.

With the win, Tufts improved to 11-1 and responded to their only loss of the season at Connecticut College on Saturday. Junior Ryan Molloy (Setauket, NY) and sophomore Sean Kirwan (Boonton Township, NJ) each scored four goals to lead the Jumbos, who finished their non-league schedule with a perfect 5-0 mark.

Endicott, which led 3-2 at the end of the first period, lost for the third time in four games and fell to 8-7 overall. Seniors Jonathan Prentice (Chelmsford, MA) and co-captain Brad Lipkvich (Madiston, CT) led the Gulls with three goals each.

Lipkvich scored twice in the first period, including a goal with four seconds remaining in the quarter to put Endicott up 3-2. Tufts then tallied its six in a row in the second period, with two each by Kirwan and junior D.J. Hessler (Monkton, MD). Junior Matt Witko (Chappaqua, NY) ended the run with an unassisted goal at 6:30 and Tufts led 8-3.

EC scored the next two, including Lipkvich's third at 11:15 of the third quarter to pull the visitors within 8-5. However, Tufts spurted again with a four-goal stretch led by Molloy's two that gave the Jumbos a 12-5 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Prentice had all three of his goals in the fourth quarter for the Gulls, but the margin was too much to overcome.

Witko added three goals and an assist to the Tufts attack, while Hessler finished with two goals and three assists. Junior Nick Rhoads (McLean, VA) won 15 of 25 face-offs, while senior tri-captain Eytan Saperstein (Hewlett, NY) scooped up seven ground balls on defense. Sophomore goalie Steve Foglietta (Oceanside, NY) had four of his seven saves in the third quarter. He was relieved in the fourth by freshman Tyler Page (San Francisco, CA), who stopped three shots. The Jumbos earned large advantages in shots (50-37) and ground balls (47-28) for the game.

Junior Jack Curtis (Chelmsford, MA) had two assists for Endicott, while junior Robert Crossett (Katonah, NY) was impressive on defense with six ground balls. Lipkvich had five ground balls in addition to his offensive production. Under fire for most of the night, senior co-captain Eric Hagarty (Sudbury, MA) made 17 saves for the Gulls, including eight in the second period when Tufts outshot Endicott 23-4.

Tufts hosts Middlebury College in NESCAC action on Saturday at 2 pm. Endicott College welcomes Salve Regina for a The Commonwealth Coast Conference contest on Thursday at 4 pm.
