Game Box Score

Senior tri-captain Eytan Saperstein came up with 10 ground balls on defense

MEDFORD -- The sixth-ranked Tufts University men's lacrosse team improved to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in NESCAC with a 9-5 victory against Trinity College on Saturday afternoon at Bello Field. Junior Matt Witko (Chappaqua, NY) scored three goals and sophomore goalie Steven Foglietta (Oceanside, NY) stopped 11 out of 16 shots on net to lead the Jumbos.

Tufts' current nine-game winning is the longest in team history dating back to 1946. Records beyond that are unavailable. Last season, the Jumbos won their first eight games before losing at Trinity. Today, a four-goal run by Tufts spanning from late in the second quarter into early in the third quarter helped them earn revenge against the Bantams.

Trinity had an early advantage in possession and led 2-1 at 9:23 of the second quarter following two goals by junior Kevin Looby (Kansas City, MO). The Jumbos scored the next four, with Witko tallying twice and junior D.J. Hessler (Monkton, MD) assisting on two goals. The Jumbos had a 3-2 lead at halftime, and then were up 6-3 at the end of three quarters. In the third, senior tri-captain Mike Droesch (Setauket, NY) scored two goals and Foglietta made five saves for the Jumbos.

Trinity junior Greg Brennan (East Setauket, NY) scored his second goal of the game to pull the Bantams within 7-4 at the 12:51 mark of the fourth quarter. However, Tufts scored the next two to build the margin to 9-4 on Witko's third goal with 9:55 remaining. Bantam senior Harper Cullen (Rehoboth Beach, DE) finished the scoring at 5:55 of the fourth.

Tufts sophomore Nick Rhoads (McLean, VA) dominated the face-off circle, winning 12 of 16. Senior tri-captain Eytan Saperstein (Hewlett, NY) had a spectacular game on defense, controlling 10 ground balls. Hessler finished with a goal and three assists.

Trinity posted a 34-33 edge in shots, and their total of 34 ground balls was led by six from junior Teddy Bascom (Sudbury, MA) and five each by freshman Jeff Hebert (Cornwall, ONT) and sophomore goalie Peter Johnson (Riverside, CT), who also finished with nine saves.

Both teams were sloppy with their possession, each failing on 11 clear attempts. Neither team converted a man-up goal, with the Bantams finishing 0 for 4 and Tufts 0 for 3.

Tufts will go for 10 in a row at Western New England College on Tuesday night (Apr. 13). Trinity hosts Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday (Apr. 14).
