HARTFORD -- Junior attackman Harper Cullen (Rehoboth Beach, DE)
netted four goals, leading a horde of eight Bantams with goals in
the game, as Trinity College gave the visiting #5 Tufts University
Jumbos their first loss of the season with an 11-9 victory in New
England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's lacrosse
action on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity improves to 7-3 overall and 3-3 in the NESCAC with its
first win over Tufts since a 10-7 road victory in 2001, ending s
string of seven straight
losses in the series. The Jumbos fall to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
The Bantams started the game strong with a goal from senior Zac
Trudeau (Norwell, MA) 1:47 into the game. Later in the first, Bantam
senior Brad Hunnewell (Chestnut Hill, MA) scored, followed by
Cullen's first goal of the game to give Trinity a 3-0 lead. Tufts
responded with a goal by junior Mike Droesch (Setauket, NY)
with 54 seconds left in the quarter.
Both squads came out aggressively and notched four goals each in
the second stanza. The Jumbos scored 10 seconds apart early in the
period, with freshman Nick Rhoads (McLean, VA) winning the
face-off after a goal by senior teammate Kevin Williams (Merrick,
NY) and scoring to pull Tufts within 4-3. The second of Tufts senior tri-captain Clem
McNally's (Far Hills, NJ) two goals in the second quarter tied
the score at 5-5 with 3:24 to play until halftime. However, Trinity
didn't wilt, as Rob Mountain and
Colin Murphy scored late for the Bantams and they led 7-5 at the
break.
Tufts sophomore attackman D.J. Hessler
(Monkton, MD) scored twice early in the third frame to knot the
game at 7-7. The teams played even through the rest of the third
until Cullen gave Trinity a 9-8 advantage with an unassisted tally
at 1:50 of the third quarter.
Jumbo attackman Ryan Molloy
(Setauket, NY) tied the game 9-9 at the 7:50 mark of the fourth
quarter, but that would be it for the Jumbos. Bantam sophomore Greg Brennan (East Setauket, NY)
scored the game-winning goal just over two minutes later. Cullen
ended the game's scoring with his fourth goal at the 3:32 mark.
Brennan, senior midfielder Connor Hustava (St. Louis, MO) and
senior captain attackman Rob Mountain (New Canaan, CT) each recorded
a goal and an assist for Trinity, while senior tri-captain attackman
Clem McNally (Far Hills, NJ) paced the Jumbo offense with
three goals. Bantam goalie Graham Fadden (New Canaan, CT) stopped
nine shots and Tufts goalie Matt Harrigan (Darnestown, MD)
made 11 saves. Trinity senior captain Connor Wells (Haddam, CT) won
15 of his 24 face-off chances and picked up a team-high seven ground
balls.
