BALTIMORE, Md. – Senior Ryan Bateman scored six goals and added two assists as the #14 Whittier College men’s lacrosse team posted a 17-9 victory over #17 Tufts University at the Bryn Mawr School on Wednesday afternoon. The Poets improved to 6-2, while the Jumbos (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season.
Whittier led 3-2 after the first period, but then poured it on in the second and third quarters. The Poets got excellent play from senior goalie Adam Messick and used their transition game to score five times in the second and six times in the third to lead 14-5 entering the final period.
Dan Fink scored three goals with three assists for Whittier, while Blake Mitchell, Evan Caldwell and Dax Harrison each had two goals and an assist. Messick finished with 14 saves.
Tufts was led by senior tri-captain Matt Malatesta’s (Winchester, MA) three goals. Sophomore Casey D’Annolfo (West Hartford, CT) had two goals for the Jumbos. Luke Chicco (Merrick, NY) started in goal for Tufts and went 45 minutes, making 14 saves. Andy Starr (Weston, MA) finished off with four saves.
