NEW LONDON, Conn. --Senior attacker Dan Hawxhurst (Huntington Station, NY) erupted for five goals and two assists Saturday afternoon, leading Connecticut College (8-5, 5-4) to a 10-7 victory over Tufts University (9-4, 6-3) on rainy Harkness Green. Kevin Burke (Beverly, MA) added two goals, reaching 100 scores for his career. It was win #170 for Camel Coach Fran Shields, who coached his final home game. Bryan Griffin (West Islip, NY) led the Jumbos with four goals. Luke Chicco (Merrick, NY) had 14 saves for Tufts. Topher Grossman (Villanova, PA) had 13 saves for the Camels.
The two clubs played to a 1-1 tie after one and were knotted up 3-3 at the half. In the third, the Camels took control of the game. After Tufts, gained a 4-3 lead, Hawxhurst scored three straight goals to push the Camels ahead 6-4. Hawxhurst added another score early in the fourth before setting up Burke’s 100th goal and the hosts had built an 8-4 lead. With 4:23 to play, the Jumbos got one back on Griffin’s third goal of the afternoon. But the Camels secured the victory on the ensuing faceoff. Ryan Childs (Boxborough, MA) set up Mike Hasenauer (Weston, CT) for a one-timer and the Camels held on for the 10-7 victory.
Connecticut College secured the #6 seed in the NESCAC Championship and will visit third seeded Wesleyan University tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The Jumbos clinched the #2 seed and will return home to meet #7 Bowdoin.
