MEDFORD – Sophomore Devin
Clarke (Ridgewood, NJ) blistered a shot off the post and into the net with
just 36 seconds remaining to lift the Tufts University Jumbos over the Bates
Bobcats, 10-9, in NESCAC Men’s Lacrosse action this afternoon in Medford. With
the win, Tufts clinched one of the seven berths into the upcoming NESCAC
playoffs.
The winning goal was
Clarke’s second of the game, and he also chipped in with two assists to lead
all Jumbo scorers. The victory
lifted the Jumbos to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the NESCAC, while Bates fell to 5-9
overall and 1-7 in league play.
The game was evenly
played as each of the first three quarters ended deadlocked. Tufts had 4-1 second-quarter lead and an 8-5 third-quarter
margin that Bates was able to erase before the periods ended. After the teams
scored five goals apiece in the third quarter, there was only one goal in a
tense final stanza and it proved to be the difference.
Tufts sophomore goalie Luke
Chicco (Merrick, NY) made 15 saves for the win. Senior Alex Kerwin (Bethesda, MD) had an excellent
game for Tufts registering a hat trick. The
Bobcats got four goals and an assist from leading scorer Brad Frost
(Winchester, MA). Senior Mark
Dobbyn (Warren, RI) made 10 saves in the Bobcat cage.
This was the fourth
straight year that Bates and Tufts played a heart-stopping, one-goal game. The
last two were won by Bates in overtime.
