AMHERST - The Tufts Men's Lacrosse team dropped a close 15-13 decision to host Amherst College in NESCAC action on Wednesday. The victory moves Amherst (7-3/4-2 NESCAC) into a tie with Wesleyan University for third place in the conference standings, while Tufts (6-3/3-2 NESCAC) drops to fifth place with the loss.
Tufts led 4-3 at the end of the first quarter, trailed 9-8 at halftime, and trailed 10-9 entering the final quarter in a tight game.
The Jeffs placed nine players in the scoring column, led by junior attackman Mike Allison (W. Nyack, NY), who paced the offense with four goals, including two in the fourth quarter. Senior Matt Margolis (Short Hills, NJ) added a trio of scoring strikes, while sophomore Alex Casertano (Millbrook, NY) and senior Chris Condlin (Baltimore, MD) chipped in with a pair of goals each. Sophomore goalie Cushing Donelan (Noroton, CT) turned away 15 shots in 59 minutes.
Sophomore David Taylor (Burke, VA) was a one-man gang for Tufts, scoring a game-high four goals. Rookie Mike O'Brien (Concord, MA) added three goals and an assist. Sophomore Bryan Griffin (West Islip, NY) and senior Alex Kerwin (Bethesda, MD) both scored twice for the Jumbos.
Tufts looks to rebound at home on Saturday against Bates. Face off is 1:00. Amherst returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. against visiting NESCAC foe Bowdoin College.
