MEDFORD -- Junior Alex Kerwin (Bethesda, MD) scored two goals and two assists as the Tufts Jumbos cruised to a 9-4 victory over the Connecticut College Camels in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory, Tufts finished their regular-season 8-5 overall and 5-4 in NESCAC. As either the fifth or sixth place team in the league, they will play in the first round of the conference tournament tomorrow (Apr. 28) at either Amherst or Colby. Connecticut College lost its fourth straight game and finished the season at 3-10 overall and 1-8 in NESCAC.
Kerwin scored the first of his two at 8:22 of the first period to give the Jumbos a 2-0 lead. His second goal of the game increased the margin to 4-0 at 10:22 of the second period before the Camels got on the board with a goal by junior Ryan Childs (Boxborough, MA) at 5:43. Tufts led 5-1 at the half.
Conn scored the lone goal of the third period at 10:08 by junior Kevin Burke (Beverly, MA). The Jumbos then scored the first three goals of the fourth period, including two by senior Jon Zissi (Winchester, MA), to squash any chance of a Camel comeback.
On Senior Day for the Jumbos, goalie Kirk Lutwyler (Ridgewood, NJ) earned the win in the last start of his career on Kraft Field with nine saves. Senior Tyler Volpe (Andover, MA) had 12 at the Connecticut College end. Junior Dan Hawxhurst (Huntington Station, NY) had a goal and an assist for the Camels.
