MEDFORD – Junior Jack Sandler (Hicksville, NY) scored 2:11 into overtime to lift the visiting Bates College Bobcats to an 11-10 victory over the Tufts University Jumbos in a great New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men’s lacrosse game on Sunday afternoon.

Bates led 10-8 after senior tri-captain Aaron Sells (Brookline, MA) scored his third goal of the game with 4:11 left to play in regulation. Jumbo senior co-captain Dan Kollar (Middle Island, NY) scored at 2:38 to cut the gap to one, then junior Jon Zissi (Winchester, MA) scored with just 13 seconds left to tie the score at 10-10. In overtime, a Tufts penalty put Bates a man up but they did not convert. The Bobcats kept possession though, and got the ball inside to Sandler for the game-winner.

This was a close battle throughout. The Jumbos led 2-1 after one quarter with junior co-captain David Supple (Rowayton, CT) contributing a goal and an assist in the first 15 minutes. Bates evened the score at 3-3 by halftime on the first of junior Dave Frederick’s (West Hartford, CT) three goals with 4:32 to go until the break. Bates took a 6-5 advantage with three goals in the third quarter, including one by sophomore goalkeeper Mark Dobbyn (Warren, RI) that gave the Bobcats a 5-4 edge at 7:21.

An excitement-filled fourth quarter featured nine goals. After Tufts tied the game at 6-6, Bates scored the next two to lead 8-6 on Sandler’s first goal at 13:01. The Jumbos came back to tie the score at 8-8 with goals 12 seconds apart by Supple and freshman Matt Malatesta (Winchester, MA) at 10:24. Frederick and Sells scored to give Bates a 10-8 margin before the Jumbos battled back to send the game into OT.

The win helps Bates’ chances of earning one of the seven spots in the upcoming NESCAC Playoffs. It hurts Tufts’ hopes of finishing in the top four and hosting a first-round NESCAC game. The Jumbos are still not a certainty to be among the field of seven either.

Four different players scored two goals each for Tufts, which got 17 saves (11 in the second half) by junior Kirk Lutwyler (Ridgewood, NJ). Dobbyn, who charged down the field untouched to score his goal, had 14 saves for Bates.

The Jumbos have a huge game at home on Wednesday against red-hot Wesleyan, which is 12-1 overall and tied for first in NESCAC at 6-0.
