MEDFORD -- Visiting Bowdoin College scored the game's first eight goals and rolled to a 15-7 victory over Tufts University in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon.
The Polar Bears, ranked 11th in the nation, got two goals apiece from seniors Nick Rutherford (Woodbridge, CT) and Jason Dewar (Canaan, NH) in opening the sizable lead. Tufts didn't get on the scoreboard until senior Matt Adler's (Princeton, NJ) goal at 6:37 of the second quarter. From that point the teams were relatively even, but the damage had been done by Bowdoin. They led 9-3 at the half and 12-5 after three quarters.
Playing in a steady rain, Bowdoin got goals from nine players. Rutherford netted a game-high four, while Dewar, junior Alex Ellis (Brookline, MA) and sophomore Josh Allen (Saugus, MA) had two apiece. Senior Nick Liebman (Denver, CO) had one to become the 16th player in Bowdoin history to score 100 goals in his career. Senior Will Casella (Sewickley, PA) was solid once again in goal with 12 saves. It was Bowdoin's sixth straight victory over Tufts.
The Polar Bears did a great job containing Tufts junior Dan Kollar (Middle Island, NY), the NESCAC's leading scorer entering the week. He did not score. Sophomore Jon Zissi (Winchester, MA) and Adler paced the Jumbos with two goals each. Sophomore Kirk Lutwyler (Ridgewood, NJ) had 10 stops in goal.
Bowdoin improved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the NESCAC. Tufts dropped to 5-2 and 0-2.
