MEDFORD -- Junior Dan Kollar (Middle Island, NY) scored six goals and sophomore goalkeeper Kirk Lutwyler (Ridgewood, NJ) made 19 saves to lead the host Tufts University Jumbos to a 15-13 victory over the Bentley College Falcons in a close New England men's lacrosse contest on Tuesday afternoon.
Tufts led 8-7 at the half with the help of two goals by senior Greg Molinelli (Northport, NY), including the go-ahead-for-good score with 33 seconds left until the break. The Jumbos pushed the margin to 11-7 with sophomore David Supple (Rowayton, CT) scoring the second of his two third-period goals with 7:24 left in the quarter. The hosts led 12-9 at the end of three.
The visiting Falcons closed the gap to 12-11 on goals by sophomore Scott Yavarow (Billerica, MA) and freshman Garrett Bain (Hampstead, NH) early in the fourth quarter. Kollar scored the next two goals as Tufts regained a three-goal margin, 14-11 at 5:20, but Bain and senior tri-captain Dean Hogencamp (Yarmouth, MA) scored 34 seconds apart for Bentley and the Jumbo margin was reduced to 14-13 at 3:42. Tufts freshman Dan Kramer (Los Angeles, CA) scored the critical next goal and that's how it ended.
Kollar's six goals are the most by a Jumbo since Dave Perry scored a team-record nine at Regis College in Colorado on March 16, 1996. Molinelli added three goals and three assists. Yavarow finished with five goals for Bentley, Bain with four and Hogencamp passed out five assists.
Tufts improved to 7-4 overall, tying the most wins by the program since 1995. Bentley dropped to 3-6. Lutwyler's 19 saves were a season-high, while Bentley junior tri-captain Jeff Neumann (Woodbury, NY) stopped 12 shots.
