MEDFORD -- The host Tufts Jumbos scored three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to break an 8-8 tie and post an 11-9 victory over Babson College in New England men's college lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon.
Tufts sophomore Jon Zissi (Winchester, MA), a transfer from Babson, scored two of his game-high four goals during the decisive stretch. The visiting Beavers closed to 11-9 on senior Scott Hoffman's (Wellesley, MA) second goal with 1:13 remaining, but they could not captitalize on their next attack and Tufts earned its first win over Babson since 1996.
It didn't come easily. The Jumbos led 8-4 at the half as Zissi and junior Dan Kollar (Middle Island, NY) each scored twice. The visiting Beavers stormed back with four third-period goals to produce an 8-8 tie on junior Chris Darmon's goal at 8:11 of the third. In the fourth, Jumbo sophomore Jim Mandler (Smithtown, NY) gave the hosts the lead for good at 9:57. Zissi followed with goals at 7:52 and 1:44.
Tufts sophomore goalkeeper Kirk Lutwyler (Ridgewood, NJ) finished with 10 saves and was steady in the pressure-paced fourth. Babson freshman Paul DeFina (Wayland, MA) also played well, stopping 12 shots.
The Jumbos move to 4-0 for the first time since 1994. They travel to play the Gordon College Fighting Scots on Thursday (Mar. 30).
