OF THE WEEK AWARD
MEDFORD --
For his fine play in goal last week, sophomore Steven Foglietta
(Oceanside, NY) of the Tufts University men's lacrosse team was
named Co-Player of the Week by the New England Small College
Athletic Conference (NESCAC) today. He is the second Jumbo to win
the honor in the four weeks it has been presented, joining junior
teammate D.J. Hessler (Monkton, MD).
Foglietta earned two victories in net as the sixth-ranked Jumbos
improved to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in the league. In a little more than
seven quarters of action, he saved 21 of the 27 shots on goal that
he faced in games against Bates and Trinity for a .778 save
percentage. Allowing six goals in 105:43 of play, he had a 3.41
goals against average.
Tufts was trailing 5-3 at Bates when Foglietta was sent in to play
goal with 43 seconds remaining in the first quarter. He allowed just
one more goal, stopping 10 other shots, as the Jumbos came from
behind for a 12-6 win. On Saturday, he started against Trinity, the
team that knocked the Jumbos from the ranks of the unbeaten last
season after eight straight wins. He stopped 11 of 16 shots on goal
as Tufts won 9-5.
In six games played (285:43), Foglietta is fourth in the conference
with a 7.35 goals against average and eighth among NESCAC keepers
with a .573 save percentage.
He shared this week's POTW award with Bowdoin's Russell Halliday.
Tufts' Hessler was recognized on March 22. Foglietta is the first
Tufts goalie to earn the weekly honor since the 2007 season.
