MEDFORD -- With back-to-back games scoring more than 30 points over
the weekend, senior tri-captain Jon Pierce (Belmont, MA/Phillips
Exeter) of the Tufts University men's basketball team has earned
a piece of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC)
Player of the Week honor. Pierce shares this week's award with Adam
Choice from Colby College.
In a 77-67 win at Wheaton on Tuesday, Pierce contributed 15 points,
seven rebounds, and three blocks to the team's second consecutive
victory. He then had the first back-to-back games of 30+ points in
his Jumbo career with 32 at Wesleyan on Friday night and 35 at
Connecticut College on Saturday afternoon. He finished the week with
a scoring average of 27.3 points per game.
Pierce now has eight career games with more than 30 points. The
totals at Wesleyan and Connecticut College gave him 1,763 points in
his career, just 22 shy of tying the Tufts all-time scoring record
of 1,785 points by Greg Davis (1982-86). The 35 against the Camels
was the fifth-best game of his career.
A two-time All-NESCAC selection, Pierce played a remarkable 55
minutes in a four-overtime loss at Wesleyan. He shot 11 for 15 on
field goals and added 13 rebounds. In addition to the 27.3 ppg for
the week, he shot 61.7 percent overall from the floor (29/47), got
to the free throw line 32 times and made 20, and also averaged 9.0
rebounds per game.
This is the fifth NESCAC Player of the Week award of Pierce's
career. It is the first won by a Jumbo player this season. Pierce is
currently fourth in the league with 17.3 points per game, seventh in
rebounds at 7.2 per game, and is also averaging 1.26 blocks per
game.
Pierce has a great chance to set the Jumbo program's all-time
scoring record at home this week. Tufts hosts UMass Dartmouth on
Tuesday night, Trinity on Friday night, and Amherst on Saturday
afternoon.
