MEDFORD -- The Tufts University men's basketball team opens its
2008-09 season tonight at home against Babson College and the Jumbos
will be led by junior forward Jon Pierce (Belmont, MA). The
leading scorer in the New England Small College Athletic Conference
(NESCAC) last year, Pierce was recently named to the D3Hoops.com
Preseason All-America Honorable Mention team.
Pierce averaged 21.5 points per game last season, shooting .523 from
the field overall (195/373) including .413 from three-point
territory (43/104). He tied for fourth in the conference with 8.3
rebounds per game and was eighth in the league with a 1.0 blocked
shots average. His 6.46 defensive rebounds per game was second in
the league.
An All-NESCAC Second Team performer last year, he earned two
conference Player of the Week awards. He was the conference's Rookie
of the Year in 2007 after leading the Jumbos with 16.5 points per
game. In 48 games at Tufts, Pierce has scored 913 points for an
average of 19.0 per game. With two seasons of eligibility remaining,
he's nearly on pace to become the University's first 2,000-point
scorer.
Pierce is one of six players in New England named to D3Hoops.com's
Preseason All-America squads. Also recognized was senior forward
Steve DeLuca from Brandeis on the first team, senior Tyler Kathan
from Keene State on the first team, senior guard Jimmy Bartolotta
from MIT on the second team, senior forward Brian Baskauskas from
Amherst on the third team, senior forward Craig Johnson from Coast
Guard on the fourth team.
