– Senior tri-captain Dan Martin
(Sandwich, MA/Phillips Andover) continued
to be a force in the post for the Tufts University men's basketball team and
was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of
the Week for his performances in wins against MIT and Babson last week.
Martin averaged 18 points, 11 rebounds, three
blocks and 2.5 steals in leading the Jumbos to a 66-61 win over MIT and a 71-55
victory against Babson. He also shot 10 for 18 from the floor (55.6 percent) and
16 for 18 from the free throw line (88.9 percent). With the victories, Tufts
improved to 9-2 overall for their best start since the 2000-01 season.
In the MIT game on Tuesday (Jan. 3), Martin scored
10 of his 17 points in the second half as the Tufts University men's
basketball team overcame a 10-point deficit early in the second half to win. He
finished with 17 points, including an 11 for 13 effort at the line, 11 rebounds,
five blocks and three steals.
He then scored 15 points in the first half against Babson as Tufts built a 38-27 lead on their way to the victory. Connecting on 7 of 12 shots and 5 of 5 free throws, he scored 19 points and added nine rebounds in 26 minutes.
For the season, Martin is third in the NESCAC with a 58.3 field goal percentage (56/96) and is in the top 10 in three other categories. The 6'8", 225-pounder is averaging 15.5 points per game (seventh in NESCAC), 7.1 rebounds per game (eighth in NESCAC) and 1.2 blocked shots per game (tied for fifth in NESCAC). His 78.2 free throw percentage is right out of the top 10.
"Dan has been great all year, and there are a lot of things factoring into it," head coach Bob Sheldon said. "He's the main go-to guy inside. Nobody else is there this year, and he's grabbed the situation and ran with it. He's quick for a big guy and worked hard at his game, developing two or three moves that pay off with his quickness. It's his senior year, he's a captain, and he wants to go out in style."
The Jumbos open their NESCAC schedule on Friday night at Colby.
