MEDFORD – Chris Harvey, the head coach of the men's basketball at Lasell College for the past five seasons, has been hired as an assistant coach at Tufts University.

A Somerville native and 1994 graduate of Worcester State College, Harvey brings a successful coaching resume to Tufts. He amassed a 104-36 record at Lasell with three NCAA Tournament appearances. The 2004 Lasers won a school-record 25 games under Harvey's direction.

Harvey has been actively involved with youth sports programs in the city of Somerville since high school. He will work as a physical education instructor at a public school in the city while coaching at Tufts.

"I was always fascinated by Tufts, and the gym, because it was right in my backyard growing up," Harvey said. "That along with the opportunity to work at a University with an outstanding academic reputation was too good to pass up."

He will join the staff of head coach Bob Sheldon, entering his 18th season with the Jumbos. Reggie Hobbs, who assisted Harvey at Lasell, is also on the Jumbo staff.

"We feel very fortunate to add a coach of Chris's ability to our staff," Sheldon said. "He'll bring some different things to our program that have already been successful on the collegiate level. He already has well established recruiting contacts. It's great for Chris and for Tufts."

Tufts is a member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), the nation's most competitive conference athletically and academically. Last year the Jumbos finished 16-10 overall and second in the conference.
