Writing Fellows Handbook

"I created this handbook for the Writing Fellows at Tufts University. It is meant to paint a picture of the world you will be working in, as peer tutors and members of the Tufts writing community. The handbook consists of interviews, advice, statements, sources and some entertaining illustrations. The information has been gathered from a variety of different people in a number of different disciplines. I hope this book will help you, both as tutors of writing and as writers in your own field."  - Eliza T. Pierson. December, 1999

The Writing Fellows Program at Tufts University is designed to enrich the process of writing by making space and time for drafts, conversations and revisions. A paper will not likely develop into a great piece of writing if it is simply churned out late at night, checked for spelling mistakes in the early morning and handed in at noon. This method leaves no room for essential stages of development, for the growth and pruning that contribute to the creation of beautiful, clear thoughts and in return, lucent prose. The opportunity to speak with someone about our writing is truly priceless. It can greatly improve the weakest paper and help even the strongest become more effective. As Writing Fellows, we have chosen to act as an essential medium in this process of growth, both for the students we work with and in our own evolution as writers and thinkers.

"Discourse carries power." - Peter Elbow
