* NOTE: NEWSA 2006 conference planners at Norwalk Community College were notified that Unite Here, Local 217, a hotel workers' union, is involved in a dispute with the Doubletree Hotel in Norwalk where we were going to house our conference attendees. When the hotel changed hands and new management laid them off during renovations, the unionized workers felt assured of regaining their jobs.

However, aside from 4 or 5 workers, workers, most of whom are women, were not rehired, including the union steward, commended for her work over 30+ years and promoted to supervisor. Since these are seen as standard "union busting" techniques, we withdrew from our conference agreement with the Doubletree.

Watch the conference program for a possible presentation on the Doubletree labor dispute. This situation is an apt illustration that Women and Justice is more than an abstract idea.
