About Writing Across the Curriculum

In the late 1980s, the faculty of Arts and Sciences voted to institute a Writing Across the Curriculum Program at Tufts. Ann Van Sant was hired as an associate professor in the English Department to develop this program. In 1988-89, the program offered its first 13 "writing intensive" courses, with an enrollment of 128 students. Course offerings increased steadily, so that in its tenth anniversary year, there were 42 courses offered.

After Ann Van Sant stepped down, she was replaced by two individuals who served as co-directors: Lynne Pepall, an associate professor in the Economics Department; and Dennis Trout, an associate professor in the Classics Department. The next set of directors, John Fyler, Professor of English and Jan A. Pechenik, Professor of Biology, finished their tour of duty in the spring of 2001; Virginia Drachman took Jan's place and she stepped down as director in Spring of 2004. Robert Cook, Professor of Psychology, joined as co-director through the Spring of 2005. In 2005-2006, John Fyler and Jan Pechenik served as co-directors of the program. In 2007, Jan Pechenik served as director, and in 2008-2009, Erin Kelly, Professor of Philosophy, was director.
