UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH

Undergraduate Research Fund

Students may request funding for senior theses and for other proposals emphasizing original research that is directly supervised by a Tufts faculty member. Supplies, travel, library cards, books, photocopying, and payment of research subjects are examples of appropriate expenses. Thesis binding, the purchase of computers or other durable goods, or payment of a salary are expenses that would not normally be appropriate. The fund will support travel to a conference if the student is presenting research, but please do not ask to be reimbursed for meals. The fund will not support participation in educational programs and seminars sponsored by other institutions.

Following are the guidelines and procedures to be used in applying for these funds.

  1. Students should submit a letter requesting funding from the Undergraduate Research Fund, with a brief discussion of the project, an itemized budget, and other sources of funding. The Undergraduate Research Grant Program Application is available for download in PDF format. Please do not send an e-mail attachment to Dean Glaser. Hard copies of all funding requests must be given to Joanne Ferguson in Dowling 710.

  2. Each request should be accompanied by a supporting letter or email from the faculty sponsor. Because of limited funds, it would be unusual for grants to exceed $450. Students receiving funding from other university sources must indicate this on their application. Such requests should not exceed $200.

  3. Please note that students doing research on human subjects must gain approval of the project from the Institutional Review Board. The approval letter should be included with the application.

  4. Undergraduate Research Fund approvals will be on a rolling basis; proposals will not be in direct competition with one another. The program will end when the funds for the year are exhausted.

  5. Reimbursement will be made upon submission of receipts and completion of appropriate financial forms.

  6. For our records, students should submit a brief (less than one page) report on each funded project.

  7. Please DO NOT ask the President or the Provost for additional funding.
