AN OVERVIEW OF PRE-MAJOR ADVISING
OPTIONS
All First-Year Advising Options Offer:
- A
small group setting to help first-year
students develop new relationships.
- A
pre-major advisor.
-
Orientation leaders to coordinate each group's
activities during Orientation.
- Group participation in
Orientation events.
The Five Options for First-Year
Advising:
Curricular Advising Program (CAP)
- Most students in the advising group are enrolled
in the same course elected by them during the summer
(one-credit, letter-grade or pass/fail).
- The academic advisor is the instructor of the
course. The course is a part of the faculty
member’s teaching load.
- The course is one of the four courses in basic
first-semester curriculum.
Faculty Seminars
-
Each advising group becomes a semester-long seminar
(half-credit, pass/fail).
-
The
academic advisor designs and teaches the course.
The course is in addition to the faculty member’s
teaching load. Seminar reimbursement is $1,250.
-
The
seminar is a fifth course in addition to the four
courses in the basic first-semester curriculum.
Host
Advising
- The traditional
advising model, host advising, involves no
participation in an advising-group course or
seminar.
- The advising
group only meets formally during orientation.
- Students
connect with their academic advisor by appointment
during the semester.
Explorations
-
Each group becomes a semester-long seminar in the Ex
College (one-credit, pass/fail).
-
The
orientation leaders teach the seminar on a topic
they have chosen.
-
The
academic advisor participates as a member of the
group.
-
The
exploration is a fifth course in addition to the
four courses in the basic first-semester curriculum.
Perspectives
-
Each group becomes a semester-long seminar in the Ex
College (one-credit, pass/fail).
-
The
orientation leaders teach from a shared curriculum
on The Movies.
-
The
advisor is not required to participate in group
activities.
-
The
seminar is a fifth course in addition to the four
courses in the basic first-semester curriculum.
