The Return of Nader

by KariHewitt 2/29/2008 9:27:00 AM

This week we learned that Ralph Nader has decided to jump into the presidential race. Not to turn this blog into a political commentary, but I think it's worth discussion among UEP students. As a student of urban and environmental policy and planning, the "visionary" side of my studies definitely shares many of the values of which Nader is a proponent. And I do not believe it would be much of a stretch to say that many of my colleagues in UEP feel the same way. However, the "practical" side of my practical visionary self can't help but think this is a terrible move on the part of both Nader and the Green Party.

Now, I am the first to agree that one of the biggest problems with our political system is that we only have two parties. I have, in fact, worked for the Green Party at the local level trying to push a more progressive movement into the mainstream. I would also never oversimplify the problems of our elections to say that Ralph Nader is to blame for Bush's election. However, with that said, this is a dangerous time to be spending resources on a national campaign that has no chance of electing a Green president. I also have many doubts that his tactics and platform are the right approach to bringing the Green agenda to the mainstream. While I agree with Nader on many levels, I can't help but think that his platform is just...and here's where I might get into trouble with my friends...TOO extreme. Please check out his campaign page: http://www.votenader.org/issues/

I realize this is a controversial topic. (It, in fact, sparked a fairly heated debate over drinks and crappy pasta at Mike's in Davis last night.) But this election matters for us as planners and policy-makers. And the framing of all the issues matter too. And I'm curious to hear what others are thinking. So...this is a blog...go to it.

An addition to my post. It has been brought to my attention that in my pre-coffee writing of this post this morning, I failed to state that Nader is, in fact, running as an Independent, not as a Green. Sorry for the confusion.

Glad you cleared up the Independent, not Green factor, but sad to see you're still perpetuating the myth that Nader spoiled the election. Kari, I expected more from you. Bush was going to be Pres. no matter what. Gore won the votes, but the GOP stole the election with the courts. There was also plenty of dirty stuff going on with ballots disappearing in Florida, Ohio and other states. This along with modern Jim Crowe tactics that kept many non-white voters from being able to cast their ballots managed to swing things in favor of the Bush. Also, I strongly believe that even more than last time, in this election there are very few people who will vote for Nader [or even Green for that matter] that would have voted for Obama or the Dems anyway. Most people who vote for Nader or Greens do so because they are dissatisfied with the Corporate Party [Dems and Reps alike]. It is important to show support for a 3rd party to boost it's future viability. It will always be a 'scary time' or 'very important that a Republican not win' and so we can't sit back and wait for it to be a good time to voice or dissenting opinions on the way the big parties have been running things. The strength of 3rd parties is coming from voters who don't feel represented by the other guys, and only once a more viable 3rd party gains some strength will more of the fence-sitting progressives begin to jump ship and join the revolution.
Furthermore, if we continue to worry about being too extreme or too radical we'll never get the changes that we need. Constantly pulling things to the center is what will further the mediocrity of progressive reform and drop things to the lowest common denominator, instead of aiming for real change.
We should talk more about this sometime, if you can't tell I have a fair amount to say about it, but like hearing others thoughts as well. Glad you posted this one.
