Program Overview
You’re already a writer. Even if you don’t see yourself as one, you write all the time: e-mails, blogs, journals, letters, papers, fan fiction, notes in class—the list could go on indefinitely. On the other hand, you’re also taking in information all the time: videos, novels, books, television shows, movies, websites. In this six-week intensive introduction to college writing, you’ll be encouraged to build on your critical thinking skills and see the world around you as a "text," waiting for interpretation. Using current literary theory (psychoanalytic, post-structuralist, and feminist theory, for example), this crash course in college writing will leave you with new insights about the texts you encounter every day.
Your task as a maturing writer is to learn to communicate your thoughts and analysis effectively. It’s true that college-level writing is distinctive in its formality, but in many ways you engage your readers in academic writing just as you try to reach them at Facebook or Twitter; you want to say something compelling about yourself or the world around you.
The Tufts Summer Writing Program provides a distinctive forum for your writerly endeavors. Using texts and film, you'll learn to navigate the relationship between writer and reader, and develop critical literary skills. With in-class free-writing exercises, informal sketches, drafts, and revisions, you will write three papers that build on a specific theme. The program’s instructor will provide you with regular evaluation of your skills and development as a writer. Guest speakers will challenge you to push your writing in new directions and will show you how good writing is useful in whatever major you choose in college or job you take in life. Your final project will be a writing portfolio that stands as a testament to your growing literary skills.
The Tufts Summer Writing Program meets Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. There is a Wednesday afternoon Writing Skills Workshop offered at 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. The cost is $2,050.
You can also combine The Writing Program with enrollment in another Tufts Summer Study option (Health Science Honors, Developing Computer & Interactive Media, or Ethics & Global Citizenship) or take a class for credit (Class of 2013 only).
